(Columbus) Cristina Villacinda‐Farr, publisher of the Dublin based Empleos and Employment
Newspaper, has been named the 2008 Emerging Hispanic Business of the Year by the
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Ohio. Awards were presented during the organization’s
26th Annual Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Banquet.
Villacinda‐Farr was recognized
for her business acumen as well as her community involvement. She created Empleos
and Employment, a biweekly employment newspaper targeted to bilingual English/Spanish
speaking job candidates in the Central Ohio market. The free publication has become
a must read publication for diverse job seekers and a valued resource for employers
in the region. The newspaper is set to launch its website in early 2009; the website
promises to be an important resource for Latino professionals.
As publisher of Empleos
and Employment, Cristina Villacinda‐Farr has become a key facilitator, bridging
the gap between local companies and diverse job candidates. She has been able to
apply her years of HR management experience to assisting companies with direct hiring
of immigrant workers to support diversify and inclusion initiatives. She has also
worked directly with many immigrant groups helping them with employment opportunities.
Earlier this year, Villacinda‐Farr brought an important “first” to Columbus when
she organized and conducted the city’s first ever, Latino/Diversity Job Fair. The
event attracted 33 companies and more than 500 job seekers. She organized and conducted
a second, successful job fair last month.
Much of Villacinda‐Farr’s community involvement
is focused on raising awareness of the valuable resource that Latino professionals
represent for employers. She has worked with local Human Resources professionals
to help diversify Central Ohio companies. She has conducted seminars on entrepreneurship
and diversity hiring. Including, the “Lunch and Learn” seminar, “Latinos: How to
Hire and How to Retain Them.”
An active board member for the Latino Empowerment Outreach Network (LEON), Villacinda‐Farr
writes a blog which addresses issues that may arise when recruiting Latino candidates.
These articles reach over 5000 subscribers. She is an active supporter of the Big
Brothers Big Sisters’ Hispanic mentoring program. In another testament to her community
service, Cristina was recently accepted into the Columbus Rotary International,
for her commitment to service above self.
Cristina Villacinda‐Farr is a first generation immigrant from Venezuela. She completed
her undergraduate degree in computer science prior to coming to the United States
in 1990. She has nearly 20 years experience as a technologist and project manager
in the public and private sectors. Married for 17 years, Mrs. Villacinda‐Farr and
